Women's Ordination Conference Supports Newly Ordained Catholic Women

On Saturday, June, 26, a group of six Catholic women from five nations,
including the United States were ordained to the Catholic deaconate in a service
on the Danube River in Europe. Two female bishops, Christine Mayr-Lumetzberger
of Austria and Gisela Forster of Germany, and one alternative Roman Catholic male
bishop, Rafael Regelsberger of Austria officiated at the ordinations.
This continues the series of ordinations of women that began on the Danube River
in 2002 when a group of seven women including Mayr-Lumetzberger and Forster
were ordained to the priesthood by two alternative Catholic bishops.

The Women's Ordination Conference (WOC), a US-based organization promoting
women priests, affirms all the ways women are living out their ministry of priesthood,
including the step made by these women on the Danube River.
We affirm our American sisters Victoria Rue, Ph.D. and Jillian Farley, Ph.D.
who along with the four other women from Canada, France, Switzerland, and Latvia
were ordained as Catholic deacons. They are each courageously living out their
baptismal call through the path of ordination.

WOC Executive Director, Joy Barnes said, "Women are taking steps to pro-actively
create a renewed priestly ministry. WOC affirms women who answer the call
to ordination and are public in their witness to the Spirit's call to them."

"These visionary women are not leaving the Church. They're renewing it",
said Judy Johnson, Ph.D., WOC Board Member and co-chair of WOC's Ministry of
Prophetic Obedience, a national program designed to support women living out
their call to ministry through ordination. "Rome has institutionalized and
straightjacketed the original meaning of priesthood and neither the papacy
nor the American bishops are going to change that until the Catholic people
show them the way."

More ordinations of women are being planned for 2005- possibly here
in the United States. WOC encourages women and men to follow the Spirit
and create a renewed priesthood for the Roman Catholic Church.
WOC calls on all Catholics to continue to transform the dying patriarchal structures
by bringing new life through a "discipleship of equals."

WOC supports women called to the priesthood through three ministries:
1. The Ministry of Irritation: Continuing to educate Roman Catholic laity
and hierarchy about the legitimate call of women to ordained priestly ministry.
2. The Ministry of Women Called: Supporting women called to priesthood
who wait on changes in Catholic Canon Law 1024 which excludes women from priestly ordination.
3. The Ministry of Prophetic Obedience: Affirming women and communities moving
forward with alternative ordinations such as those that took place on June 26.

The Women's Ordination Conference (WOC) is the national organization advocating for equality in all aspects of life and ministry in the Catholic Church- including women's ordination. WOC will celebrate its 30th Anniversary in 2005. The organization can be reached at 703-352-1006 or www.womensordination.org.

Women-Church Convergence Supports Women's Ordinations as Step Towards Discipleship
 of Equals

We affirm our sisters Victoria Rue Ph.D. and Jillian Farley, Ph.D.
from the United States. and Michele Birch-Conory, Ph.D. from Canada and the three
other European women who have chosen ordination as a path to living out the fullness
of their baptismal call.

Reclaiming the earlier traditions in which women functioned as deacons, priests,
and bishops, these women are breaking a "male-made" boundary
that excludes women from ordination.
We call on these women to continue to work for the transformation
of intrinsically evil patriarchal structures by bringing about the discipleship of equals. We affirm all the ways women are living their priesthood now.

Women-Church Convergence is a coalition of autonomous Catholic-rooted organizations,
communities and groups raising a feminist voice and committed to an ekklesia (church) of women which is participative, egalitarian and self-governing. Member organizations are located in both the United States and Canada.
