Mary and Joseph were often not there." This changed in the centuries that followed. Prantl says: "After several centuries, Mary was portrayed as the child-bearer, but still on the margins of what was happening." At the same time, a totally unrealistic understanding of Mary came into being. In this Pastoral Letter, we would like to focus on Mary as a real mother in her experiences before and after the birth. MARY WAS VERY MUCH ALONE Mary was really alone during the birth. There was no competent midwife there to help her. Joseph, as the father, was also inexperienced and probably had no idea what to do to help Mary. And they were strangers, alone in a strange city. MARY WAS HOMELESS FOR THE BIRTH Mary experienced what it was like to have to no roof over one's head. Finally they found the stable. During these days she experienced what many mothers who are abandoned by their families, go through: having no roof over one's head, no heating, no comfortable bed or sofa where one can bring the child into the world, no cosy nest, but only a dark, cold stable. MARY'S CHILD WAS BORN 'AT HOME' Although the birth was not in Mary's own home, it was technically a 'home birth' - in contrast to what we commonly have today, a birth in a hospital or maternity home. A home birth is often better for the mother. So often, in a hospital, the birth must happen according to the dictates of the hospital timetable or the convenience of the doctor. At home, the pregnant mother is more in control and the natural intensity and rhythm of the birth process can take its course. This is especially important because giving birth is a deeply moving experience. The birthing mother is psychologically very unstable and vulnerable and she often overreacts to outside stimuli. During the birth she needs peace, intimacy and safety. THE CHILD DETERMINES THE TEMPO The mother in labour is not, in fact, the one who decides the tempo of the birth and the time-of-arrival of the baby. Rather it is the child itself who is ready to come out of the mother's womb into this life: the child is ready to be born. NO STORIES PASSED DOWN ABOUT THE BIRTH ITSELF It would be interesting to know what Jesus' birth was like for Mary but there is nothing about this in scripture or tradition. The Infancy Narratives in Matthew and Luke, as we know, were probably a later addition to the synoptic gospels. MOHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS AS PRIESTS AND BISHOPS When we Womenpriests can minister in the Church, "when, at last, mothers and grandmothers are among the priests and bishops" (as one university professor - a woman - wrote recently), then more will be said about the feminine, about women. Then children will not be something exotic from another planet, but very much part of the life of Church and society. Then the churches will not become ever emptier, but the children and grandlchildren of the priests and womenpriests will bring their friends to church, which will be a child-friendly place. ********************************************************************** With these thoughts, we greet you all warmly. Our wish for the New Year is that women and children will have their rightful place, intellectually and maternally, in society and in the Church.
