J E D E R M E N S C H W I L L E T W A S W E R T S E I N Der Körper des Menschen braucht primär Luft, Nahrung und Ruhe. W I E K Ö N N E N M E N S C H E N E I N W E R T G E F Ü H L E R R E I C H E N ? S O L L M A N M I T G E W A L T R E A G I E R E N ? ------------------------------------------------------ II. P A S T O R A L L E T T E R 2004 / 04 The Pastoral Letter for September 2004 deals with the topical issue: THE WORTH OF ONE'S OWN LIFE. We are all shaken by the recent acts of terrorism in the world and shocked at the attitude of suicide-bombers who want to be 'Martyrs for God' and wantonly kill hundreds, even thousands of people. There is much research being done on the causes of such behaviour: what drives people to this kind of violence? What physical or spiritual needs do they have, to act in this way? E V E R Y O N E L O N G S T O H A V E A S E N S E O F W O R T H. Our physical needs are basically air, nourishment and rest. Our personalities long for recognition, approval and a sense of personal worth. To be born and then to spend one's life in senseless activity simply for pleasure, or to lie around in bored idleness or in consuming, consuming, might be a kind of physical paradise but spiritually, for our deeper selves, this is torture. We have within ourselves a deep longing to get somewhere in life, to achieve something worthwhile, to have a sense of worth. A S E N S E O F W O R T H L E S S N E S S is unendurable, so people seek desperately for attention and worth. When they cannot find this through positive actions and contacts, they turn to what is negative: theft, crime, conflicts with neighbours, violence, envy, aggression. Life becomes a series of downward-spiralling negative events. N E G A T I V E R E C O G N I T I O N It is deplorable but true that people can gain attention and recognition for both positive and negative behaviour. One can become famous as a result of successful communication or philosophy, or notorious when one's evil deeds are the subject of newspaper headlines or magazine articles. Both fame and notoriety seem to give people a sense of worth. There is an ever-increasing divide in society between those who give themselves to what is good and positive and growthful, and find their sense of worth therein, and those who seem to lose themselves in what is negative and harmful. A P P E A L S F O R P E A C E O R C H A N G E fall on deaf ears. People who have gained the world's attention because of their harmful deeds seem to find no meaning in selfless consideration for others. People long to achieve something, not so much by peace and refraining from action, but by action and involvement. A N A L Y S I N G O N E ' S S E N S E O F W O R T H We need to analyse our own sense of worth and what underpins it. We also need to receive recognition of our worth from others. We experience much of our sense of personal worth in dialogue with others and in cooperation and involvement. This is very different from a lethargic attitude of 'peace at any price'. H O W T O G A I N A S E N S E O F W O R T H? In the first place, we find a sense of worth from friends, family or colleagues who tell us what we mean to them. But how is this sense of self-worth achieved in our world in the face of the gigantic acts of terrorism and violence that have taken place in recent years? W A R F O R T H E S A K E O F A S E N S E O F W O R T H Particularly since 2001, the world has been threatened by people who aim to be the centre of attention through their acts of incredible violence. By immensely theatrical, dramatic acts of violence, the terrorists place themselves on centre-stage and grab the world's attention: the highest towers, the poorest children, the most helpless mothers and the least aggressive men are the objects of attack and slaughter. This is war waged, not to overcome an enemy, but rather to gain attention for the aggressors and for them to achieve a sense of worth. 'G O D ' S W I L L' I S C I T E D We often read that 'God's will' is quoted, that to be a martyr is 'the most direct route to the Kingdom of God'. Beoming a martyr, then, is upheld as achieving the greatest possible worth, even before God . And so that all may witness the martydom, it is planned as part of the most momentous demonstrations and attacks, so that everyone can see the suicide-attacker catapult himself into the high status of martyrdom. Y O U S H A L L N O T K I L L The commandment of God that we must not kill is put aside in favour of achieving a sense of personal worth. 'I want to be a martyr, the nearest to God's throne' could be the attitude of someone who has experienced a sense of worhtlessness, rejection and meaninglessness in life. S H O U L D W E R E A C T W I T H V I O L E N C E? If we react with violence, if we threaten total destruction and bomb them out, these people will be pushed even more deeply into their sense of worthlessness, which could be fatal for the entire world. E N T E R I N T O D I A L O G U E We have another option: we must enter into dialogue with those who cannot live in harmony with their own personality as they search for meaning in life. We need to try to show that wealth is not everything, that power is not the only worthwhile goal to strive for and that to become a martyr through mass-murder does not necessarily entitle one to a place with God. T A K I N G P E O P L E S E R I O U S L Y At the same time, we need people who can take others seriously, people who can understand how painful it is to feel rejected and to have to live as the underdog or in some form of slavery. Those who understand this need to start the dialogue, they need to be people skilled in mediation and conflict-resolution and they need to develop strategies for the way forward. We have to get ourselves out of this bloodbath caused by error in finding self-worth, by religious fanaticism and by arrogance. F I N D I N G T H E R I G H T L A N G U A G E We must teach people how to name conflict, how to find the right language to express why they cannot live meaningfully, why they believe they have to murder people. The acts of terrorism of the last three years have been actions without words: shooting and bombing, but no talking, no discussion. There were no cries for help. The silence of the murderers combined with the silence of those who were killed. We are opening, in our homepage www.virtuelle-dioezese.de a section on conflict resolution and will be happy to respond to appeals for help in conflict-resolution at our email address. With the wish that we may empower ourselves and others to recognize our need, express our longings and develop solutions to our conflicts, we greet you all most sincerely.
